Tubifex
 
[zu lateinisch tubus »Röhre« und facere »machen«], im Süßwasser lebende Gattung der Schlammröhrenwürmer. Bekannteste Art ist der 2,5-8,5 cm lange, durch Hämoglobin rot gefärbte Bachröhrenwurm (Tubifex tubifex); er lebt weltweit verbreitet, besonders auch in verschmutzten Gewässern, häufig kolonieweise in selbst gebauten Schlammröhren, und führt mit dem nach oben gerichteten Hinterende schlängelnde Bewegungen zur Darmatmung aus; er kann bis zu 48 Stunden ohne Sauerstoff auskommen, indem er Energie über die Glykolyse gewinnt. Tubifex wird als Futter für Aquarientiere gezüchtet.
